The Star reported that a century of stainless steel, which was discovered in Sheffield, will be celebrated next year and the action kicks off at a city gallery.

An exhibition entitled Designed To Shine, 100 Years of Stainless Steel, is on display at the Millennium Gallery from February to October 2013.

The free show explores how rustless steel was discovered by Harry Brearley in Sheffield in 1913, the design and innovation which followed and the city’s global reputation for high quality metal goods.

A year long celebratory events program follows.

Museums Sheffield chief executive Kim Streets said: “We’re absolutely delighted that Designed to Shine will mark the start of Sheffield’s 100 Years of Stainless Steel celebrations taking place across the city.“

A city wide arts and heritage partnership, featuring both universities, The Company of Cutlets and Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust, has been brought together to deliver the 100 Years of Stainless Steel event program.

Events confirmed so far also include a play version of The Full Monty at the Crucible Theatre and a Women of Steel concert at Sheffield City Hall in November.

Celebrations also aim to promote the heritage and history of manufacturing. More projects will be announced.
